April 17th, 2006 NE Turkey

This AM we got started early to get set up along the edge of the field where the turkeys roosted. The weather was mild with temps. in the mid 60's, light wind, overcast with a light fog in the early morning hours. We got our decoys set up and a turkey was gobbling even before day break. More turkeys joined in during day break and I was at a vantage point to see turkeys fly down and mill around the field the entire time. Our plan was once we got a shot at a turkey we would sit tight so that we would not spook the other birds too bad. We both were set up at opposite sides of the field and we both attempted to call during the morning. At 7am about 3 gobblers and 9 hens came towards my decoys. I took a shot at the first tom at 27 yards and bagged him. I let him lay in hopes Mike M. would have a shot. During that time two deer came in to check out the turkeys, my decoys and the dead tom. After 3 more hours, with some random calling another Tom got curious of the decoys I took him at 62 yards which was my only shot. Turkeys weighed in at 18 and 22lbs, with 81/2 and 9 inch beards.
